Summary of the Project
The homeowners purchased this home 10 years ago, when the home was being custom built from a divorcing couple. Although this was a nice home, it was not the European style the new homeowners had always wanted. We designed and rebuilt the exterior. Aluminum/vinyl eave wrap and gutter color was changed to coordinate with the new stone and recoat brick finish. Boral “Recoat” masonry coating was used for solid color finish on brick as well as using Owens Corning “Cultured Stone” for wall accents over brick veneer. Natural flagstone was selected for the front porch to cover the brick and coordinate with the color of the “Cultured Stone”. Operable custom made cedar shutters along with shutter dogs were installed to give the authenticity of Old European Style architecture. New exterior light fixtures as well as new Amarr “Classica” wood grain finish steel garage doors replaced the existing doors. Two brick chimney chase tops were demoed and rebuilt with new masonry detail adding a copper cap and copper “Jack Arnold” chimney pots to add character to the chimney chases. The homeowners now have a beautiful Tuscan, European style dream home to be proud of.
Project accomplishments, significant challenges and creative solutions
This exterior makeover made a significant impact on the curb appeal of this home as well as giving the homeowners the European style home they had always dreamed about. We found it difficult to install stone over brick to left of front entry in dead valley and prevent “damming up effect” so we removed 2’ of shingles and installed ice and water shield under a copper dead valley creating flashing under new stone veneer and enabling clear water flow to scupper gutter box. As stone was being installed over brick veneer we cut off the window sills and sliced stone to create sills below windows as well as on the return to brick mold of front door. Creating the cedar shutters we milled tongue and groove 1x4s rough cedar, connecting them with cross members, using large cast barn door strap hinges to ensure long term operation of shutters. The homeowners are planning new landscaping to complement their beautiful new dream home.
